Negatives Turned Positive

MrNoriega-blue

Only God can turn negatives into positives.  He can turn uncertain feelings, adversity, and tough times into something good.   A comforting verse I lean on from time to time when I face difficult times is Romans 8:28, "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose." There is no comparison to the peace you can attain when you lean on God's sovereign grace.  We don't understand why adversities and difficult times come our way, we just need to know that God is not surprised by them. He knew that they would come and permitted them in order to mend and mold us closer to His image.  Our purpose is simply to trust and ask the Lord to help us keep our focus away from the bitterness and despair and look to Him who will give us hope, and strength during those times.  As we embark into a new year, there will be many challenges that will turn to amazing blessings, if we allow the Lord to have His way and complete the good work He has begun.

I pray that you and your love ones had a memorable Christmas break together.  You might remember that last year I shared with you the reasons for having an extended Christmas break.  Because of the change we started the school year earlier than usual.  I hoped that by completing the first semester before Christmas break our students would be first, better prepared to do better on their final exams and secondly, that they would not have any academic responsibilities hanging over their heads during the break.  Freeing the students in this manner would give them and your families more quality time to spend with each other during this special season as we commemorate the birth of our Lord.  I have heard from many of you regarding this change in our schedule.  I would like to collect more information so that we can make future plans for years to come.  As of now our schedule is set for next year and we will duplicate this year's extended Christmas break.  However, if this is not as favorable for the majority we will consider making changes for the following years.

I have set up a brief survey questionnaire on RenWeb for you to complete and let me know your opinion on the Christmas break schedule.  Please take a few minutes to answer five simple questions.  You can go to your parent login on Renweb and click on survey.  There you can respond to the questions and offer some suggestions.  Your responses will be anonymous to us so you can be candid with your response.  The survey will be actively available until February 29th.  In our March newsletter I will share with you the result to this survey.

Reminders:

Re-enrollment has now been available for a month.  I want to encourage you to complete the re-enrollment forms and return to the office.  You can access the school's website and download all the necessary forms.  Remember after March 3rd the fee will increase by $100 and will risk your student's space.  Also, it is important to note that we have included a new form for a confidential recommendation to be completed by your pastor or church leader.  The enrollment is incomplete until we receive all these forms.  So, follow up with your pastor or church leader to make sure they have sent this form to the school.

Study Abroad in Israel is the title of our new program that will allow students to experience the Land of the Bible and earn high school credit.  This trip will be scheduled in June 2008.  I trust you have received a flyer explaining the details.  If you have any questions please call me for more information.  The final deadline for registration is February 6th.  If you and /or your student would like to participate, you may pick up a registration form in the front office.  We plan to repeat this program the following year as well.

On behalf of the faculty and staff I want to express a heart felt appreciation to all of the parents that donated towards the Christmas gift for our teachers and staff.  Your generous giving has blessed us all.  Thank you and God bless you.

In His Service for your children,

Mr. Noriega

FAFSASeniors:  Remember that March 2nd is the deadline to file your FAFSA in order to qualify for Cal Grant money.  Additionally, many colleges have a March 2nd FAFSA deadline for their institutional aid.  Do not delay in getting this important document filed.  You will not be offered a financial aid package until your college receives their report from your FAFSA; the sooner you file, the sooner you will hear from your college's financial aid office.  If you believe you qualify for Cal Grant monies and you plan to attend a community college next fall, complete the FAFSA by March 2nd in order to reserve Cal Grant money until you transfer to a four year institution.

SATJuniors:  Please stop by the CCC and sign up for an appointment with Mrs. Sweeris to discuss your college and career plans.  Also, if you have not already registered, this is the time to register for the SAT and/or ACT.  Plan your test dates now to avoid conflicts with your spring weekend social events.  Don't forget to allow a test date for the SAT Subject Tests if you plan to apply to the University of California.  Visit www.collegeboard.com or www.actstudent.org to register.

"SPREADING HOLIDAY CHEER"

Sunrise Group

In December just before finals week, 15 Student Government kids warmed the hearts of the elderly with their Christmas spirit.  We visited the Sunrise Assisted Living home to sing Christmas carols, give Christmas cards along with holiday fruit baskets.  They smiled, laughed and sang along with us which blessed us so much.
sunrise2After singing we greeted each resident with a warm hand shake or embrace and wished them God's blessing which truly touched our hearts.

Our Christmas luncheon prepared the 2010 Moms' hearts for the holidays.  After sharing a delicious potluck buffet we had a Christmas ornament exchange.  What fun we had "stealing" ornaments from each other while trying to remain nice!!

2010 MOM'S CHRISTMAS LUNCHEON 021Kathleen Rago ended our afternoon together by reading a modern day rendition of "T'was the Night Before Christmas" that had us all laughing.

Thank you, Catherine Johnson, for opening up your home for our December luncheon.  Stay tuned for details regarding our next luncheon.

SPANISH CLASS OPPORTUNITIES

Summer Spanish Program 2008

HOLA!

This course is intended for students wishing to advance to Spanish II but who may not have the final grade to move on. The policy at Berean Christian High School states that students must have a "B" or better at the end of the second semester of Spanish I in order to advance. This summer course is designed for students who have a "C" or a "D" at the end of the second semester but demonstrate a sincere desire to continue on with Spanish.  Students who successfully complete this summer program will be able to advance on to Spanish II. This program will not replace a student's grade on his/her transcript.

The course will focus primarily on concepts taught in the second semester of Spanish I but will also review key areas from first semester in order to have students ready to enter Spanish II in the fall.

The class will be open to no more than twenty students and will run for four weeks starting Monday, June 2nd and ending Friday, June 27th. The hours are from 9:00 am till 12:00 pm., Monday through Friday, and the cost per student is $550.00.  Admission is based upon review of academic records. I will also be speaking with Mrs. Grieg to discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each student wishing to take the summer course.

If by the end of the first week, a student does not show promise of moving on, I will meet with the parent and there will be full reimbursement of costs. After two weeks, the amount refunded will be determined on a case by case basis.

Enrollment in this special summer program will begin after third quarter grades have been issued. If you are interested in this special opportunity, please contact Mrs. Freese for a registration form. Payment in full will be due on or before the first day of class.

Should you have any further questions, please contact Mrs. Freese either through email or by phone.

SeesDo you remember a long time ago in October when we handed out the See's candy boxes to your student?  Well, they are past due and we are still in need of the funds.  We are so grateful to the many, many families who have turned in your envelope, however we still have over a hundred envelopes outstanding.  Please help us meet our goal so we can begin to fund our upcoming events.  Each $48.00 envelope will make a difference and continue to make our events possible.  Please note that you will not be billed for the box, however we encourage you to support us and return your envelope to the office.  Thank you very much.

WINTER BANQUET 2008

~ An Evening to Remember ~

WB Idol Judges

This year's winter banquet "A Moonlit Night"  held on Saturday, January 26th  at the Concord Hilton Hotel was an evening to remember.  Each table had a beautiful setting of white roses in tall cobalt blue vases along with small sheer blue bags filled with chocolate kisses for each person.  We enjoyed each other's company and  the delicious dinner of a chicken entrée with mashed potatoes and fresh vegetables.  Immediately after dinner our entertainment began.  We hired a DJ to assist us with our first "BC American Idol" contest.  Our DJ, Josh, introduced the American Idol judge impersonators (pictured above) who came in character as "Randy Jackson" aka Mr. Noriega, "Paula Abdul" aka Veronica Chung ('04 alumni) and "Simon Cowell" aka Mr. Mead.    Three categories of WB Hoyperformances took place - soloist, duets and groups.  The audience clapped, cheered, laughed and sang along as the various acts poured their hearts out to the karaoke song they selected.  The judges were great in mimicking the TV judges' responses which made our audience boo and sometimes cheer.  The biggest cheer was for Mrs. Hall who sang the lead in "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" with some senior girls.  It was worth the price of the ticket.

WB GroupThe final BC American Idols soloist is Kelly Hoy (pictured above), duet Justin Dabill & Ben Porter (pictured left) and group Michael Connolly, Luke Heisinger and Frankie Mason (pictured below).  They were awarded iTune cards and the title of American Idol.

WB Group

We ended the evening with an amazing dessert of dark and white chocolate mousse cake with caramel sauce.  Everyone left satisfied with the meal and most importantly entertainment that will keep them talking for weeks.  Maybe in 2009 we will be looking for the next American Idol!
