2011  MOM'S LUNCH

2011 lunch

The "2011" freshman  moms (pictured above) lunched together last month in the Clubhouse Room of the Club Villas condos in Walnut Creek.  We had a wonderful time getting to know each other and finding out all the things we had in common.

Some of us are "newbie" freshman parents, so it was a great informal way to ask questions and learn more about Berean from parents who have been at Berean for awhile with older students.

We enjoyed a lunch of sandwiches and salads. Big THANKS to Seana Shafer and Alicia McCormick for planning and hosting this first of many get-togethers for freshman moms.

A Difficult Job

MrNoriega-blueYou may be thinking that your job is probably the most difficult or challenging job in the world.  Regardless of what you do, whether you are in Christian ministry or working in the secular world, you are faced with challenges, stress, and pressures that are unique to your job.  For some of you, the day to day (or moment by moment) unexpected surprises overwhelm you and make you wonder if anyone else has it as hard as you do.  However, if we seriously looked at every kind of job there is, I am convinced that the most difficult job of all (and the most rewarding) is parenting.

I want to share a few thoughts with you because I think we as Christian parents sometimes live in an idyllic dream world regarding parenting when things don't always turn out the way we think they should.  Everyone has their own idea or formula for raising children.  For some, this formula may work, but for others, it may result in disaster.  Some parents become bitter with God and lose trust in His promises when their children exhibit a will of their own.  There is no question in my mind; parenting is a difficult job and perhaps the most difficult one of all.

I do believe, though, that parents try their very best to raise their children.  After all, second to the Lord, they are the most precious possession we have in this life.  As an administrator, I have seen how some parents have made enormous sacrifices to provide the very best for their children; they do the best they can with the skills and backgrounds they have.  As I meet with parents of prospective students my heart is warmed by the sincere and almost desperate desire they have to enroll their child in our school.  So strong is their desire to have them in a Christian environment that they are willing to make significant personal sacrifices to have them here.  I know God honors those parents who make such a sacrifice to give their children a Christian education.

With all of the effort and sacrifice parents make, I believe parenting is still the toughest job of all.  Occasionally, parents will see their child heading the wrong direction by making careless and poor choices.  As parents we are grieved to see this happen despite our best efforts in teaching and guiding them.  It is during these times that we need to carefully consider God's Word in Ephesians 6:4.  Here Paul admonishes Fathers (or parents) to not exasperate their children but to raise them in the training and instruction of the Lord.  To exasperate means to cause them to become enraged or angry.  You might ask, "What are some things that might cause our children to be exasperated?"  I would suggest that our actions speak volumes to our children, such as: displaying favoritism to other siblings or family members, being over-protective (especially for boy's), or under-protective (especially for girl's), being excessively pushy in regard to unrealistic expectations and achievements, disciplining in anger, and finally, inconsistencies in our messages and actions toward our children.  As much as possible, keep your promises to them.  Sometimes we fail in keeping our word to our children, especially when they are young.  We take the liberty of breaking those promises because we know it is easier to deceive them.  But as they grow older, they become wiser to this deception, and thus, develop anger, bitterness and disillusionment.  In essence, they have become exasperated with their parents.

Jesus made a promise to his disciples, and all of us, when He said in John 14:1-3, "Do not let your hearts be troubled.  Trust in God; trust also in me.  In my Father's house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you.  I am going there to prepare a place for you.  And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am."  He is a Father that will not let us down.  He will keep His promises.  So, we can trust in His Word.  This is the kind of trust we need to instill in our children.

Whatever challenge you may be facing with your children, remember to dedicate them to the Lord and trust that He is the Sovereign God that will take care of them.  Pray for them, love them, and point them in the direction of the Lord.  Leave the rest to Him.  May God bless you and your family as you persevere in the most difficult job in the world-parenting.

Sincerely,

Mr. Noriega

photoIn a similar manner to the portraits taken at Winter Banquet, we are offering your student's photos at JSB with no obligation or up-front cost.

Individuals, buddies, couples and groups can have their photographs taken at JSB. The photos will be posted online at www.picateers.com where you can review and choose the photos and picture packages you wish to purchase. If you are not happy with the photos you are under no obligation to purchase any at all.

MARCH MADNESS

3 on 3 bball

Pictured L-R: The 3 on 3 girls' basketball champs including Mae Johnson (left)  who subbed for her sister Caroline (far right) at the championship game, Jillian Kemper and Shada Sadeghi.

March Madness- well, it definitely said what it meant!  On March 10th thru the 14th there was nothing BUT Madness: competitive girls and boys 3 on 3 basketball tournaments, a high bidding Servant Sale, different wildly themed dressed days, and to top it off, a powder puff football tournament coached by our very own varsity players Sam James, Mitch Lee and Andrew Redlick.

The week began with International Dress Day, in which students represented the various countries, followed by Lumberjack Day, a new theme that went spectacularly well with plaid jackets, workin' boots and an axe.  Next, was the favorite ever-fun Twin Day, followed by HOLI-Day and the week ended with the forever-rivalry of Pirates vs. Ninja Day.  Students and teachers alike participated in each of these fun-filled days.  Some of our teachers really got into the spirit on twin day by coming dressed as triplets---see pictures below!!

The basketball tournaments were intense as the competition heated up.  The boys battled even with the subs having to come in due to illnesses.  But this year the girls received the plaque as Shada Sadeghi, Caroline Johnson (Mae Johnson sub at the championship game) and Jillian Kemper won the title at the March Madness tournament.

During the powder puff football game,  last year's tie was broken as the upperclassmen girls pulled out a victory!  Madness, yes, it sure was; but this year's March Madness had no shortage of fun and incredible memories.

We are very thankful to all of our willing servants who served their masters on March 20th and to the purchasers for their generous donations.

PENNIES FOR PATIENTS

PENNIES FOR PATIENTS

jsb 2008

Hey everyone, it's time to have our annual Pennies for Patients competition!  This competition runs from Monday, March 31st through Friday, April 4th.  This is a class competition, but that's not to stop the staff from joining in on the fun too.   The way this works is, we have set up big water jugs in the Student Center dedicated to each class.  Throughout the week students and staff put pennies in their jugs and silver coins (such as nickels, dimes or quarters) in the opposing teams water jugs.  The pennies are positives points and the class with the most pennies is our winner.  Every silver coin is a negative point and takes away from their class score.  The winners will receive spirit points.  All the money from the jugs will go to the medical research of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.  At the end of each day we tally up the coins and let each class know who our winner is the next morning. The competition gets very exciting and the rewards go to such a great cause!

We'll keep you posted.

Michael, Sherine and Lauren

SAN FRANCISCO ZOO FIELD TRIP

A DAY AT THE  ZOO ---

ZOO group

On March 17th,  132 students and 28 chaperones headed to the San Francisco Zoo for a field trip.  The students represented three classes taught by Dr. Comfort and Miss Fung at Berean;  Biology, Anatomy & Physiology and Advanced Placement Physics.

Zoo - AJWhen they arrived at the zoo, Dr. Comfort handed out assignment sheets to be completed and turned in at the end of the day. The students broke up into groups and disbursed throughout the zoo, working together to complete the assignments.  The sunny weather put many of the animals in playful moods, including the lions and baboons as well as the bears.  Thank you to the many chaperones and drivers who came along to help. It was a wonderful day!

These same classes will being going to Monterey Zoo studfyBay Aquarium on April 28th.  Each class has a unique assignment for that particular subject area.  We also encourage the students to share the gospel whenever possible. This is an all day trip and we'll return to Berean just before 8:00 p.m.
