Pennies for Patients Made a Difference

pennies

We are proud and happy to say that we have just finished our Pennies for Patients fundraiser.  We raised five-hundred dollars for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and we can't wait to send our donation into the foundation.  During the two weeks, students and teachers brought their loose change to contribute to this event.  Pennies were positive points and all silver coins were negative.  The race was close from the beginning.  Congratulations to the seniors our Winners!!!  You guys stepped up your game in the last week and broke through to the lead.  The staff who took the lead from day one ended up in second place; the freshmen in third; the juniors in fourth and the sophomores placed last.  We thank all those who participated and contributed to this event.  We would also like to express our appreciation to all the parents and faculty who made a donation check to this fundraiser.  Again, thank you so much everyone!  The funds are for a worthy cause which we happily support.

2010 MOM'S LUNCHEON

2010 Mom's Luncheon

The 2010 moms enjoyed a wonderful luncheon in April at Paula O'Brien's lovely home in Clayton.  We were delighted to have four first-time attendees and enjoyed getting to know them.

We ended our afternoon with an insightful "get acquainted" game led by Kathleen Rago. Each mom was asked the question, "If you had the time to take one class, what class would you enjoy taking"?  Answers ranged from gourmet cooking to tap dancing to Old Testament history.  It was fun getting to know each other!

Don't miss our last luncheon of the school year on Friday, May 16th at Kathy Ferro's home.  We are spicing things up with a Mexican cuisine theme!  Evites have already been sent to all 2010 moms.

If you did not recevie an Evite, please click on my name below to email me for more information.

 Never Give Up!

MrNoriega-blueIn just a few weeks the Class of 2008 will turn the tassel to end a significant stage in their High School careers.  The spiritual growth and development that has taken place in their lives these past four years may not demonstrate its fruit for many more years to come.  But, one thing we can be sure of, is what we as parents and teachers have done for these young people gave them foundational opportunities for their futures.  As I prepare to offer some last words of encouragement to the Class of 2008, I can't help but think that while they will individually go in many directions, there is a basic principle of life that will last.  The principle is to persevere in the Truth no matter how the world will influence them.  Class of 2008-never give up.

If our young people are to become the life-time followers of Christ we hope they will be, then let them take these good words of advice from Dr. Kent Keith (1968) from his book "The Paradoxical Commandment:"

People are unreasonable, illogical and self-centered.

Love them anyway.

If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish motives.

Do good anyway.

Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable.

Be honest anyway.

The biggest ideas can be shot down by the smallest people with the smallest minds.

Think big anyway.

What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight.

Build anyway.

People really need help but may turn against you if you help them.

Help them anyway.

Give the world the best you have and you may get kicked in the teeth.

Give the world the best you've got anyway.

Help me help these young people internalize the principle to never give up, and while we are at it, we may want to internalize it for ourselves too.  Work, dream, give and love with the love the Lord gave each of us, even if we never receive anything in return.  Let us also believe what Luke 6:38 has to say:  "For if you give, you will get!  Your gift will return to you in full and over flowing measure, pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, and running over.  Whatever measure you use to give-large or small-will be used to measure what is given back to you."  So never give up.

On another note, there are two important notices I need to remind you as parents to be aware of so that they will not catch you by surprise:

  1. RenWeb will be disconnected beginning May 23rd.  Report cards will be mailed out the first week in June.
  2. Also, remind your student that even though it is the end of the year it is not the time to let down their guards.  Any demerits earned starting on May 5th until the last day of school, which is May 29th, will carry over to the following year's record.

At the end of the school year I usually like to give you the opportunity to respond to our school-wide survey on RenWeb that will give us your evaluation of how well we are doing.  This survey will become activated on May 2nd and remain open for your response until May 23rd.  As before, these surveys are designed for all families to respond with complete anonymity.  The results will give us only the number of participants and their response.  I have been conducting these surveys each year for the past two years and I have been disappointed by the low response.  Nonetheless, we take all of those respondent's comments and suggestions to find ways to improve our school program.  So, please take time to respond; it is simple and does not require much time to accomplish.  Thank you.

Since this is our last Newsletter correspondence, I want to express my heart-felt appreciation to many of you who have given so much time in helping us accomplish this service by your voluntary assistance.  Also, on behalf of the faculty and staff I want to thank each and every one of you for entrusting us with your most valuable possessions, your sons and daughters.

May God richly bless each of you with a wonderful summer.  And, may He bless each of your family members with His abundant love and grace.

Sincerely,

Mr. Noriega

Brain Tumor Walk for

Coach Johnson

This past Saturday, May 3rd, 2008 we took part in the San Francisco Brain Tumor Walk and Angel Adventure with Coach Johnson. It was an opportunity for an outreach ministry to give hope to families who need Jesus for strength and guidance.  We had about 25 students, parents and faculty all wearing bright yellow t-shirts partially donated by Jeff Willis reading "got hope?" on the front and the back reading "Jesus is the answer."  "But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.  They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they walk and not be faint."  These shirts WALKATHONGROUPstood out in the crowd of thousands of people as we walked proudly with our shirts.  We could see by some of the smiles on peoples faces that our message spoke to the hearts around us.    We wanted to share the message that Jesus is the answer to what truly has blessed Coach Johnson and his family through this time, and all they want to do is spread the love and hope of the Lord to people who are going through this same trial.  It blessed us all to share this day with Coach and to also make a donation for the research in finding a cure.  There is HOPE and faith in finding a cure.

TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK

frames

Throughout this month we have prepared for Teacher Appreciation Week to honor our faculty and staff.  We've made picture frames (pictured left), wrote cards, took pictures, made a special video, shopped for favor gifts, painted posters and did some baking.  It has been worth it to show our incredible staff how much we love and appreciate them.  Each day last week our class officers served the staff lunch in classroom E2.  On Monday, the freshmen served a delicious catered lunch from the Maestre family Filipino catering business; Tuesday the sophomores served a catered Mexican fiesta from El Faro; Wednesday the juniors served a homemade spaghetti feast; Thursday the seniors served a Chinese buffet from Three Brothers from China; and on Friday our entire class shared lunch with the staff purchasing lunches from the Art Show Barbecue.

The staff was also honored at a special chapel with a video on Fridayteacherjackets and presented cards and a gift; jackets with our field logo honoring our new athletic field.  We also made picture frames with the staff photos including verses and or words of thanks and encouragement that are now hanging on the halls of the office so they can feel encouraged and blessed every.

"The Allied Invasion of Normandy" by Matt Adams

The 6th Annual History Fair was a tremendous success and it was estimated to be the most well attended to date!  The projects...well, I ran out of great adjectives to use an hour or two into the judging process. Amazing, inspiring, awesome!!! If you were there, you know what I mean.

"The Eiffel Tower: Making Its' Way To The Top" by Mariah Soltero

The following projects received special recognition:

  • By unanimous decision of three judges,  Best of Show went to Brooke Fraser for "Their Blood Resounds". The project compares the persecution of Christians by the Roman Empire in the First & Second Centuries with that of Christians in North Korea in the 21st Century. She explains her interest in the subject is because she "plans on becoming a missionary someday and and has been moved by many stories of Christans who withstood terrible suffering for Christ's sake."
  • The award for Creative Excellence went to Dustin McCormick for "Soviet Espionage in the Cold War" which was exceptionally high on viewer involvement & interaction.
  • Brendan Dailey received recognition in Academic Excellence for his work on "Snipers in World War II". He produced a rock-solid thesis, excellent research and highly supportive visuals.
  • Claire Fredriks was recognized for Best Integration of a Biblical Worldview. The Biblical applications this year were the best ever. There was much competition for this catagory. Claires' presentation of "Child Prostitution in India" was an excellent example of many demonstrating a Biblical worldview.

Many projects moved people emotionally, hopefully, to greater action for Christ. These top four projects will be reassembled for the Annual Awards night ceremony on Monday, May 12. The students are now busy writing stories of things they learned and experienced through these projects. Perhaps there may be a platform for sharing these later. In a few weeks, Dr. Jung will post a slide show of projects on the school website. Keep checking for it.

Berean has every reason to be grateful to the Lord for the outstanding job these students have done. Thanks for all the support to Administration, staff, and parents. Congratulations to all students who worked so hard!

SG's Final month---

sg class

The count down is here and May has arrived!  We're excited for the ending weeks as we put our final events in motion.  We begin with a PALS lunch on Monday, May 12th.  We will be "passing the baton" on Tuesday, May 13th with the SG assembly.  At this assembly, our current class will give gifts to the next year's class and our theme for next year will be introduced by our new ASB President Kristen Fraser.  Later that day at lunch, we will begin day 1 of our Dodgeball Tournament where 16 teams have already signed up.  This tournament will last until Friday, May 16th when a championship team is crowned.  Next, we have Senior Retreat from Sunday, May 18th through Tuesday, May 20th at the KOA Camp in Santa Cruz.  The guest speaker is alumni Tim Arnett ('05) who did an incredible job at last year's senior retreat.  The final event will occur on the same day Wednesday, May 21st.  We will have senior chapel were the senior officers select seniors to share and have a final class prayer.

I am so thankful and blessed for the hard work and commitment this class has given to me and the school.  Each one of them represented our class verse as the Divine Servant and it was a joy to serve along side them everyday.  I will miss them all very much.

The Abundant Life Singers Tour was last week...and we are tuckered out, but very blessed!

If any of you think that our main purpose is to end up at Disneyland...you are incorrect.  We sang and ministered at the Fresno family shelter, arriving in Riverside at 1 a.m. at the fine Motel 6.  Try to find out who didn't have beds in their room!  The next morning took us to California Baptist University, where we had a quick campus tour, a 1 1/2 hour voice class, and then a two hour choir rehearsal with their fantastic choir.  ALS sung for them and did a great job and they decided to sing their best performance of the year there.  I wonder if 140 college students and another high school choir of about 60 made any difference to them??

We sang at Magnolia Village Retirement Center, which is across the street from the college.  The people were so appreciative of our kids.  I wish that you could see the love our students showed because it would have warmed your heart. After that exhausting day we finally arrived in Anaheim.

The Los Angeles Mission was our next stop, where we sang for about 100 homeless and guest.  It is one of the greatest blessings of our year.  We shared the program with Sister Quinn, who spoke a very powerful message which will be remembered.  I will never forget Sister Quinn.  And, she called me Sister Natalie.  I kind of like that.  Any of you who want to begin addressing me that way, may.  : )

No rest for the weary...on to Artesia Christian Home for two performances.  What a blessing this home always is to us.  The people, mostly of Dutch decent, and all Christians, show us what a lifetime of loving God looks like.  This was my tenth year there and I, as usual, left very blessed.

Ask some kids about our motel fiasco.  It still stings a little for me, as it was most likely my fault.  AARGH!  But, God is good and found us another place to stay quickly.  That's all the detail I will give.  Once, again, I came home very tired, and very happy to have spent quality time with my students.  We all grow closer to each other while we are gone.

Now, on to the musical!!!  Don't miss it.  May 9th and 10th at 7:30 pm in the Berean gym.  It is a Broadway Revue this year, with the addition of several very funny sketches by the Drama Department.

"Living it Out" at Spring Retreat

Seniorsatretreat

This year's Spring Retreat was an awesome time of fun, fellowship, and growing closer to our Lord.  It began with excited students leaving early on Thursday after lunch to hop on the bus for a three hour ride to the mountains of Silver Spur Christian Camp.  After settling in, the first event of the trip was a time of worship and hearing the first session from our energetic speaker,  Jeremy Swigard.  He shared how we needed to "lace up" and be ready for the race for the Lord.

SpringRetreatRecTimeThe events on Friday were highlighted by the recreational fun of a giant swing (pictured left), the rock climbing wall and, of course, the thought provoking words of our high spirited speaker once again.  To conclude Friday night the students gathered around the campfire to roast s'mores, and share about how God has been moving in our lives.  We also had a special time of prayer for Coach Johnson.

SpringRetreatSmoresFriday morning Jeremy challenged us to live for the Lord and reach out to our families, friends and community.  Overall, the retreat was spiritually encouraging and physically a blast!

"Welcome to the Claremont!"
greeted the friendly doorman, as students strolled through the doors of the beautiful and elegant Claremont Castle.  The stunning interior, as well as the scenery surrounding the white castle left students spellbound.  From 5:30 to 6:30 pm, JSB attendees enjoyed socializing with their friends while listening to a harpist and taking pictures in front of the castle backdrop painted by artist Tyler Norwood (pictured above), eating appetizers, sipping lemonade with green sugar-rimmed glasses, dipping various food items into the 44" chocolate fountain, and filling up on a assorted candy ranging from green rock candy to green gummy rings to chocolate covered raisins and mints. But that was just the beginning...

TracyAdamsJoshWhen the students entered the ballroom to two knights holding royal flags at the door as they entered, they were awed by the beautifully decorated tables and grand stage.  After everyone found their castle named table and were seated, the live performers came out singing and performing "Be our Guest" both on the stage and throughout the audience.  Then while they enjoyed their salads each table selected the best dressed of the evening.  It was difficult to choose because everyone looked amazing.  The best dressed boy was Tim Allen, the girl Tracy Adams, and the couple,  Kirsti Dishman and Mitch Lee, who all took home the movie "Enchanted" as a gift.

For the main course everyone enjoyed the beef tenderloin cooked to perfection on risotto and fresh asparagus.  Once again, the performers dazzled us with a final number to wish everyone a happily ever after evening as we enjoyed our sweet dessert of turtle cheesecake.  We concluded with  a few special thank you's and then the students were given their photo albums and chocolate castle gifts.  This spectacular night at the Claremont Castle came to a close but, the memories will live on.  Happily Ever After!

The girls strike a jazz pose at the beginning of their routine

Following weeks of early morning practices, the BCHS Varsity Cheer Team packed up and headed down to Azusa Pacific University for the Fellowship of Christian Cheerleaders' West Coast Championships.  This year our team branched out and competed in a new category:  Senior Jazz Dance.  We are especially grateful to alumnus Leah Gonzalez, Class of 2001, for sharing her expertise in dance by choreographing a professional routine and working with the team to help prepare them for competition.  The girls did an amazing job at the competition!   The only damper on the whole experience was leaving behind senior Alexis McIntosh who was nursing illness and an injured ankle; she was greatly missed!

Monterey Bay Aquarium Trip

Aquariumgroup

On Monday, April 28th the students in Dr. Comfort's and Miss Fung's Biology, Anatomy & Physiology and Advanced Placement Physics classes headed off on another field trip to the Monterey Bay Aquarium in Monterey.  Three buses of students and chaperones left Berean around 9:30 am and returned about 8:30 that night.  In between they spent time at the aquarium working to complete their class specific assignments and were treated to a little R & R time at a nearby beach.
