Believe It or Not

But I
said to you that you have seen Me, and yet do not believe.
John 6:36
Because of the sophisticated technology that allows
movie makers to produce films and games known to be unreal but
appear to the senses as real, we have cultivated a generation of
young people (as well as older ones) who are skeptical of what they
believe. "Prove
it!" is a
phrase I hear all the time from young people. "Don't tell me what I should
believe is real or not real ---prove it!" Actually we need to
be convinced by our senses that something is real. We need to
put our hands on it, taste it, see it, and experience it in order to
determine whether it is real or not.
The disciples were not
much different, and they did not have the techno media we have
today. However, when
Jesus challenged them with the fact that they had to eat his flesh
and drink his blood in order to have life, most of them left him for
good. It took a lot for the remaining disciples to stretch
their imaginations and believe without proof. Jesus did not make it easy
on the remaining disciples.
There were no options for them; they had to believe
it or not.
This reminds me of the words of C.S. Lewis in his work
A Grief Observed when he says, "You never know how
much you really believe anything until its truth or falsehood
becomes a matter of life and death. It is easy to say you believe a
rope to be strong as long as you are merely using it to cord a box.
But suppose you had to hang by that rope over a precipice. Wouldn't
you then first discover how much you really trusted
it?" Jesus
found out how much His disciples believed when fifty eight of the
seventy departed from Him because they really did not
believe.
It is sad to say that too many people today
have similar attitudes about God. Unless God can be proved, He
doesn't exist. Unless
you can point to physical evidence that God is real, they will not
believe. We gain
meaning of our world by those things that can be proven real with
our senses. Worse yet,
there are those who claim to believe but their behavior points
otherwise-somewhat like those disciples that could not accept the
challenge Jesus offered.
In a world of so much imitation, our young people are
desperately seeking to find those who truly believe. The bottom line is
that young people rely on and trust in the reality they see lived
out in our lives.
I have learned that they are astute in deciphering the truth
from parents' and teachers' words, actions and values. How real do they see God in
our lives? This is a
question that will weigh heavily on their belief in Jesus'
words. Ultimately, they
will have to make the decision whether they will believe it or
not.
Simon Peter said it all, when Jesus questioned the
remaining disciples about why they did not leave Him like the rest
had done. In John 6:68
and 69 Peter said, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of
eternal life. We
believe and know that you are the Holy One of God."
Jesus did not offer proof; He wanted them as He wants us to believe
Him for who He really is.
May the Spirit of Truth give you assurance this
Christmas and in the year to come that Jesus is Lord; He has the
words of eternal life.
Merry Christmas and God bless
you!
Sincerely,
Mr. Noriega

register early. Test
dates, locations, and online registration forms are listed at
www.collegeboard.com and
www.actstudent.org.
Please plan now which tests you
will take and when you will take them. If you have questions about
ACT versus SAT, you may stop by the College and Career Center to discuss the two tests with
Mrs. Sweeris.
Remember, the UC's require an ACT with

The Student Government class led by our
Orientation Committee has put together a fun and informative event
for our prospective students.
All 8th grade and above are invited to hear about our
school's academic, spiritual, social and athletic programs. They
will also see videos demonstrating how our school operates. The best part of all is the
tour of the school and classrooms. It can
be overwhelming for them to imagine attending high school in
the fall and sitting in these classrooms and walking the halls. We conclude our time with a
pizza lunch and fellowship to help answer any of their
questions. Not too long
ago everyone in our class experienced this special
day.
Prospective Parent Information

This night is an opportunity for parents to invite
their friends or family interested in getting information about our
school. It is also open
to the community. Our
administration will talk about the programs we offer. Everyone is invited to tour
the campus and pick up packets of information as well as an
application form for the upcoming school year. We look forward to meeting
new families and answering any
questions.

Do you hear what I hear? It's Berean's annual
Deck the Halls! "Oh Come all Ye Faithful" to see
the winter wonders of the transformed student center. Every year, Deck the
Halls has been a jolly old tradition. Everything from the joyous
"Winter Wonderland" to the classical "Charlie Brown
Christmas", encompasses the creative minds of each class of
the officers.
These officers are put in charge of the thrilling task of
choosing a Christmas oriented theme and day to decorate the student
center to spread some Christmas cheer the week of Dec. 10th (Monday
through Thursday).
The
seniors kick off the week with "Christmas at
Bloomingdales," followed by the Freshmen with
"Charlie Brown Christmas," then the sophomores,
"Candy Cane Forest," and lastly the juniors
"Snowglobe" experience. The cheerleaders end the
week with a "Happy Birthday Jesus" party on
Friday. This merry
tradition adds some cider spice and jingle to our otherwise drab
student center. The
task may seem tedious as each class sets up the night before, but
the magnificent outcome is worth the work and wonderment in
everyone's eyes.
On behalf of Berean's student government class,
we wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and Happy New
year!

STUDENT GOVERNMENT COMMUNITY SERVICE
UPDATE
|
WALK-A-THON UPDATE AND
STATS

Once again, we would like to thank all of the 84
participants for making our event a success. Our participants
walked a total of 1458 laps around the field totaling 364.5
miles! So far, we've
received over $3,000 in donations and they're still coming in. We will be sending our
donation to the UCSF Cancer Research in January, so it's not too
late to turn in your contribution.
A Helpful Can Food
Drive
This year's canned food drive helped feed the
needy men, women and children of the Bay Area Rescue Mission in
Richmond.
Our students had a competition to see which class could
collect the most canned food items in their class color. Earning spirit points as a
reward, the Juniors won with a total of 47
items. In
total the student body collected 169 canned and
nonperishable foods.
Thank you for helping us bless these families this holiday
season.

SEE'S CANDY
FUNDRAISER
|
|
WOW!
A HUGE SUCCESS!
Sweet! The newest Berean fundraiser
was a scrumptious success!
The entire student body was given the opportunity to help
raise funds by selling one box of See's candy bars. For the competitive at
heart, a contest was held among the classes to see who could sell
the most by November 12th.
It was a neck to neck race to the finish, as the
Sophomores pulled ahead by only two boxes to beat the
Freshmen. The
Sophomore class will be rewarded with a Christmas lunch party given
by our class on Thursday, December 6th, with the theme
"Green."
The total number of boxes sold thus far is approximately 270
making that 6,480 bars!
Many families have sold more than one box and our
highest selling family was the DeBoer's (Stephanie,
Matt and Anna, pictured above) selling SIX
boxes! Thank
you everyone for your participation. If you haven't already,
please turn your envelope into the office as soon as you can. The funds raised will go
towards events held for the entire school. It was a delectable
achievement for the first year and we can't wait to see if we can
beat this number next year!

SPIRITUAL EMPHASIS WEEK
|
|
Living it Out for Spiritual Emphasis
Week
This special time in January from
Monday the 28th thru Friday February 1st, 2008, we will
kick off the new year as we experience a week of spiritual
growth. Our guest
chapel speaker for the week is Jeremy Cook, the pastor of Concord Bible
Church, who will share with us messages on developing and
renewing our walk with God and strengthening our faith in Him. Then on Friday we have
various seminars given by faculty and parents on topics we as
teenagers need to learn more about.
Also, our community service committee has a 30 Hour
Famine to help feed the hungry. It begins Thursday, January
31st, after lunch, and concludes with a dinner held at the school on
Friday. After dinner
the famine participants along with chaperones will take a bus to the
San Francisco Rescue Mission.
We felt honored last year, as we attended the mission for a
time of worship and distributed items to the homeless. We need your help once again
in donating items to our blanket, coat and sock drive. Beginning the week of
January 22nd and continuing until Friday, February 1st, we will
provide bins in the student center to collect these items. We greatly appreciate any
used or new items for these people in
need.

WINTER BANQUET 2008
|
~ Coming in
January ~
WINTER BANQUET 2008

Our Winter Banquet plans have now been
confirmed. Our event
will be held on it's original date, Saturday , January 26th,
2008. We needed to be
sure our sports programs did not conflict with the date, so
adjustments had to be made.
Our theme is
"A Moonlit Night" and the banquet will be held at the Concord Hilton
Hotel beginning at 7:00 pm. Tickets will be on sale
December 10th through January 18th for $35 each (except during
finals week). Starting January 22nd through the
24th they will increase to $50 each. January 22nd will also be the final deadline for
Guest Permission slips to be turned in and NO EXCEPTIONS will be
made.
The last day to
purchase your tickets for the banquet will be Thursday January 24th
and again, no exceptions.
We are looking forward to a very special evening under the
moonlit night.
Berean Christian High School has entered into a
strategic partnership with Picateers.com, a San Mateo, California
based high tech company. For the Winter Banquet, photographs will be
taken of each individual, couple or group (up to 5) who would like
to pose. The photographs will be posted on a
special website for the event. Students, parents and other
interested family members can go online and select the photos and/or
packages they wish to purchase. Each family will receive an
email giving them a special code that gives them permission to view
the photos. Picateers.com will process the orders and ship the
packages to the school for distribution. There is no obligation to
purchase anything in advance. If you like the photos you can
purchase them. If not, you aren't obligated to do so. As a bonus, 50% of the cost of all photos purchased is
returned to the school. Don't miss this opportunity for a special
memory.

MISSION TRIP OPPORTUNITY
|
|
Mission
Work
One of our core values is service
related. Our mandate is
to serve others, following Christ's example. We want our students to
recognize that as disciples of Jesus Christ, we need to be willing
to put others first by serving their needs. This coming spring many of
our students will join their church groups on special mission trips
to Mexico. This
year our school will work in cooperation with one of our founding
churches to offer any of our students interested in mission work the
opportunity to be involved.
Calvary
Baptist Church of Concord will be making its fourth trip to
Baja, California, Mexico.
During this one week expedition, the students will have an
opportunity to work in building two homes for the poor. The group will also be
involved in children's ministry and personal evangelism by
distributing tracts and Spanish Bibles. There is a need for
students that are proficient in Spanish to help
translate. We would
also like for students to get involved in drama presentation and
worship.
If you are
interested in having your son or daughter attend this
mission trip, or if you would like to come along as well, then
contact Mr. Noriega for more information. The cost of the trip will be
$350, and the first team meeting will be held at Calvary Baptist Church, 2140 Olivera Court, Concord on Sunday, December 2nd at 12:30 pm.
You can call the Calvary Baptist Church at
925-685-1424.

STUDY ABROAD - ISRAEL, 2008
|
STUDY ABROAD
Israel 2008
Berean is offering its first
study abroad program for our students. Any other adult interested
in the trip as a vacation is also welcomed to join our excursion
this coming summer.
In June 2008, we will be taking our first trip to the
Holy
Land. Students that are interested
in earning academic credit or college credit can apply to do
so. This trip will have
our students walk where Jesus walked and learn the many historical,
geographical, and biblical stories they have heard over the
years. This
will be a ten day trip leaving from San Francisco connecting in Europe and ending at Tel
Aviv. The tour
will include special sites in Jerusalem, Galilee and the Dead Sea area. We plan to visit
Qumran as well as go up to Masada.
The students will enjoy a half day swim in the Dead Sea.
In Jerusalem, we will visit the Temple site as well as the Western Wall and
Garden Tomb where we will share communion. In Galilee we will visit many areas including a
visit to the Jordan
River where Jesus taught the
multitudes. All
accommodations will be four star. We will have morning and
evening sessions and special lectures by our instructors. Currently, we are
estimating a cost of $3100 per person. Students will receive 10
units of credit in Bible for Berean graduation
requirements. For an additional nominal
fee, they will receive 3 college credits from Shasta Bible College.
All those interested in this trip should contact the school
office to post your name for reservation. We will contact individually
each person interested. A flyer will be
mailed to all families in the next few weeks. We are also planning a
formal meeting with parents and travelers on January 18th at
6:00 pm in
room E-1.

The
Berean Boys' Varsity Soccer Team is poised to begin a new
season. Under the direction of a new coach,
Mark Lambourne, and asst. coach, Brian
Pouch, the team is looking to establish a foundation for a
solid program in the years to follow. Focus has been on
improving individual skills as well as sharpening their soccer
acumen. It's all about playing hard and competing for this
year's squad.
This year's team has
a solid core of returning players but is definitely a young
squad. The team is comprised of one senior (Tyler
Norwood) and 6 juniors, 5 sophomores and 7 freshmen.
Juniors Paul Miller and Markkus

and Kevin Alman (F) anchor the center of
the defense with Kyle Fischer (jr) at
Keeper. Sophomores Chris Morgan, Mark
Magalong and Kahler Lawhon combine with
freshmen Erik Delgado and Michael

anchored by Stephen Croft (soph), JC Witt

Michael Houseman, Michael Carlos and
Craig Cary. Joe Rutherford

insurance at the Keeper position.
