gram? It is a Christmas scented pencil with a Christmas
gram attached. Send your student a smencil gram during fourth period any day until
Christmas break! Students can also order smencil grams for each
other! It is a fun way to wish each other a "Merry Christmas"! Each
smencil gram costs only $1.50 each. So please
order one for your student(s). Simply fill out the
attached order form and place both the money and

LUNCH |

Pals Lunch E-News
On November 8, the upper classman had an
opportunity to have lunch with their freshman Pal. After
fourth period, they embarked on their way to a Mexican fiesta.
The food was catered by Los Panchos, so everyone received a taco,
burrito, chips, rice, and beans. As the students enjoyed la
comida sabrosa they chatted amongst their peers and got to know
their Pal better. The students exhibited team work as the
Orientation Committee hosted "Name that Movie". Though the
food was delicious and the entertainment was spectacular, all good
things must come to an end. Can't wait until next quarter!

DEBATE
TEAM |
|
RESOLVED:
"The United States federal government should
substantially reform its environmental policy."
The Berean Christian Debate Team continues its
participation in the Logos Forensics Association (LFA), which
started 4 years ago in Northern California and now has participants
as far as Colorado and Southern California, with the ultimate goal
of giving our members the skills to both communicate and
defend the Christian worldview on college campuses and in the
workplace.
We
kicked off the season with an informative introduction to the world
of government regulation by our own Mr. Govreau.
In October, our team attended the first
tournament of the season in Ripon, California. The Berean
affirmative plans included incentives for solar charging stations
for electric cars, promoting nuclear energy through public education
and the safer disposal of nuclear waste in Yucca Mountain, Nevada.
We faced four other schools, debating such plans as eliminating the
Endangered Species Act, mandating conversion of ranch animal waste
to natural gas, and abolishing the US agency studying global
warming. Our students displayed an impressive use of logic and
rhetoric.
On
December 3rd, we will compete at Contra Costa Christian
High School in Walnut Creek.
We invite you to join
us on January 14th, 2012, our biggest event of the
season, when Berean will host an LFA tournament on our home
turf. There is still time to join our team and
participate in the spring debates. Please contact
Mrs. Hollenbeck or Zack Fitterer for more information.

COLLEGE AND CAREER |
December 2011/January 2012 Newsletter
College and Career Center
SENIORS
FINANCIAL AID
A financial aid seminar will be offered on January
9, 2012 at 7:00PM in the Student Center. A brief
overview of all financial aid will be presented; additionally, the
FAFSA will be discussed in detail. Please join us
as we offer details on the 2012-2013 FAFSA and Cal
Grants. The FAFSA filing period for this year's
seniors and their parents is between January 1 and March 2, 2012.
Seniors and parents both need
PINs to file a FAFSA online. Visit www.fafsa.ed.gov in Dec to request a PIN for
use in January. You may also use the 4caster at
that website to predict FAFSA results.
This workshop is designed specifically for seniors
and their parents; however, underclass college-bound students and
parents are welcome to attend.
CAPS AND GOWNS/GRADUATION
ANNOUNCEMENTS
December 1 was the order
deadline for caps/gowns and graduation announcements.
Any orders received after that date will incur a $25 late fee
from Jostens. Contact Daniel Grobeck at grobeckoffice@jostens.com or 925.283.9283 with questions.
JUNIORS
ACT and SAT
You may register now for your
spring ACT and SAT tests. You are more likely to
get the test center of your choice if you register
early. Test dates, locations, and online
registration forms are listed at www.collegeboard.org and
www.actstudent.org.
Please plan now which tests you will take and when
you will take them. If you have questions about
ACT versus SAT, you may stop by the College and Career Center to
discuss the two tests with Mrs. Sweeris.
Remember, the UCs require an
ACT with Writing or an SAT Reasoning Test. Some
UC campuses recommend SAT Subject Exams. For
specific campus information, visit http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/freshman/requirements/examination-requirement/SAT-subject-tests/index.html . The
CSUs require either an ACT (without the optional Writing component)
or an SAT Reasoning. Please check the private
schools' web sites to determine their test requirements.
Most will accept either the SAT Reasoning or ACT.
Some secular private schools may require SAT subject exams in
addition to the ACT or SAT Reasoning.
JUNIOR APPOINTMENTS
Juniors, please stop by the CCC
to sign up for an appointment to discuss your college and
career plans with Mrs. Sweeris.
PSAT and PLAN RESULTS
Students should receive their PSAT scores during
either US History (juniors) or English II (sophomores) by
mid-January. Please discuss the test results with
your student; if you have questions, feel free to contact Ms.
Dishman or Mrs. Sweeris. PLAN results will be
distributed during freshman appointments next spring.
President's Volunteer Service Award
Berean Christian High School encourages our students
to perform community service as an opportunity to share our
Christian faith through serving others. We will
honor deserving students by presenting them the President's
Volunteer Service Award during Berean's Award Ceremony on May
9. During the first three weeks of February,
students (all grade levels) may submit verification of volunteer
service hours in order to receive the President's Volunteer Service
Award.
To qualify for the President's Volunteer Service
Award, a student must have a minimum of 100 hours of community
service for a recent 12 month period. Awards are
given based on the number of hours served, so please be specific
with the number of hours you report. A bronze pin
signifies 100 to 174 hours, a silver pin signifies 175 to 249 hours,
and a gold pin signifies over 250 hours of service within the
previous 12 months. Volunteer hours may be earned
through a variety of venues. In previous years,
Berean students volunteered at hospitals, community organizations,
churches, scouting, mission trips, and residential centers for
senior citizens.
You may go to www.presidentialserviceawards.org to learn
more and to track your hours, or you may use your own form to
track your service.
Please submit:
student's name
name of each organization where the student
volunteered
the service the student performed and total hours
for each organization
a supervisor's signature to verify the number of
hours
total number of hours volunteered within the 12
month period
You may submit more than one type of service from
more than one place, but each submission must have a supervisor's
signature to verify the number of hours.
Deadline to submit your verification forms to Mrs. Sweeris
in the College and Career Center is February 24th
. Please remember to total the
hours.

You may have heard of Khan Academy,
http://www.khanacademy.org/, a website
that provides free access to thousands of video lessons on
topics ranging from pre-algebra through advanced calculus,
chemistry, physics and beyond. One site resource that may be
especially helpful for BCHS students preparing for the SAT college
entrance exam is found at http://www.khanacademy.org/sat. There,
you will find video solutions for all 432 math problems from the

CRABFEED
|
In
February of 2012, we will be hosting our 9th Annual Crab Feed here
at the school. This event raises the majority of the money we
use to help operate the sport's programs here at Berean. The
Boosters are in need of several families like you to participate in
leadership and volunteer positions in order to make this a
successful event. I will say it again: This fund raiser makes a real
big impact on the future of the sports here at Berean. You
like sports, right? The Berean Booster Club is inviting you to
sign up now to participate and also ask you and those you know who
have businesses, to seriously consider being an auction donor at
this event. It truly amazes me how we pull this off each year,
but we do because of your willingness to sacrifice by serving and
finding businesses that want to participate as well. Simple?
Not even. But it all happens because of our mighty Savior
and it is an awesome night once we have all done our
part.
Here is what you can
do right now to make a difference:
1)
Email me and become a volunteer or leader.
2)
Get 1,2, or 3 businesses to donate items that we can auction off, or
loan us so that we can help sell for a profit, which will benefit
them as well as Berean.
3)
Get others involved.
Here is my
information: DarryllWhaley@Gmail.com. Please email me,
have the businesses email me, and have others email me as
well.
Thanks for your
faithfulness in support of Berean Christian High School and the

BASEBALL |
BEREAN
BASEBALL
How
Bad Do You Want It?
Do
you dream of playing high school, college, or even professional
baseball? Do you want to win a league title? Do you want to win a
section championship? Maybe the person with these big dreams is on
the Berean baseball team. Maybe this person is on your cross-town
rivals' team. Maybe this person is you!
If
these are your goals and these are what you want, then the effort or
work that you put into it must be equally ambitious. That is,
you will get what you put into your playing and preparation. It's
always easy to set goals, but it's harder to attain them. Players
need to ask themselves - do I show up at off-season workouts? Am I
playing Fall/Winter Ball? Am getting in the cage? Am I getting up at
6 a.m. to work out? If you said no to at least one of these, then
don't be surprised if you're hitting below the Mendoza Line, riding
the bench, or wondering why you aren't reaching your
goals.
Even though
tryouts are more than three months away, mark your calendars for
baseball tryouts that begin on Monday, February 6, 2012, after
school at Heather Farms Park, Field 5.
If you
played with us last season, or a new potential player interested in
joining Berean Baseball in 2012, send me an email by December 20th,
so that I can invite you to team meetings or send out other
important information before the season
begins.
There
is every opportunity out there for you to prepare for the season.
There are camps, club teams, private lessons, and indoor facilities.
There are baseball fields near where you live, batting cages at or
near your school, and most likely a garage or backyard in your home.
In baseball, like other sports where
repetition-repetition-repetition is critical, don't expect to just
turn it on at tryouts. Get ready! Right now there is a batting cage
or a bullpen or an infield where there is someone working their butt
off to get better. Does this person want it more than you
do? Do you have what it takes to get better and join our team?
Then, we will see you on the 6th.

GIRLS
BASKETBALL |
Girls Basketball
The girls basketball program got off to a bit of a shaky
start by not having enough players to fill a JV team but is going to
finish strong this season with a solid varsity group. With 5
returning varsity players, four of them starters from last year, we
have a great nucleus for a vastly improved team that is excited to
play. The returning players are Seniors Jessica Vestal and
Katrice Mitchell, Juniors Madi West and Courtney Louie, and
Sophomore Rona Chavez. To round out the team we have a very
promising transfer student from Concord HS, Sophomore Tracy
Randolph, along with sophomores Gianna Nardi and Kayzelle Ramas, and
Freshmen Lizzie Pintarich and Taylor Chaffey. These girls are
working hard at practice and improving every day.
During the
week of Thanksgiving we started off the season playing quite well in
a scrimmage vs. Acalanes HS and then hosting the annual Alumni
Game. The varsity team gave the Alums all they could handle by
making a total of nine 3-pointers along with some great play in the
key to notch an 11-point victory. The Alumni Team was led by
Julia Reid, Stephanie Curtin, and Assistant Varsity Coach, Erica
Horn. Great job, ladies!
During the month of December the
girls will be traveling to tournaments in Willits, San Francisco,
and Watsonville in order to build some team unity and also prepare
themselves for what will be another tough season in the DVAL.
Home games in the month of December will take place on Dec 10th vs.
Las Lomas and Dec 13th vs. Contra Costa Christian. Come out
and support the girls basketball team. You won't be
disappointed.

SOFTBALL
CONDITIONING BEGAN ON MONDAY, OCTOBER
31st:
Softball
season starts in the spring, but in preparation we are begining fall
workouts. During this time, we strengthen our bodies, work on
basic skills and begin building team unity. This is open to
anyone interested in playing softball in the spring. We
encouage any and all playing levels/experience in our program as we
have a JV and Varsity team!!
These
sessions are non-mandatory but highly encouraged. Please
attend as many of the workouts as possible. If you cannot
attend, home workouts are possible as the workouts are available on
paper. Conditioning is Mondays @ 3:15, Wednesdays @ 2:45 and
Thursdays @ 3:15 behind the gym. Each session is approximately
one hour long. If there is no school, there is no conditioning
that day either.
Looking
forward to getting our season off to a strong start....."But as for
you, be strong and do not give up, for your work will be rewarded."

GIRLS
TENNIS
|
Team Verse:
"Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet
trials of various kinds, for you know
that the testing of your faith produces
steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you
may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing."
James 1:2-4

The
girls' varsity tennis team wrapped up their season with a 12-3
overall record and a 10-2 league record. We had nine girls qualify
for the DVAL League Tournament: Singles Kelly Finnegan, Kelsey Gee,
and Sam Finnegan; Doubles Hannah Freed and Loren Jackson, Katie
Hudgens and Taylor Miller, and Gabby Nobili and Regan McDowell.
Five players were selected as DVAL All League
Players: Kelly Finnegan and Kelsey Gee - First Team Singles; Hannah
Freed and Loren Jackson - First Team Doubles; and Sam Finnegan -
Second Team Singles.
Kelly
Finnegan also
qualified for an at large berth in the NCS Singles
Tournament.

A special "thank you" goes to our team captains
Loren Jackson, Hannah Freed, and Kelsey Gee. You did an
excellent job of leading the team both on and off the court during
practices, matches, and devotions.
Congratulations to all the girls on a great season!

VOLLEYBALL SEASON WRAP-UP
|
| Berean
Volleyball Game IMG_0724.MOV |
The poles, nets and balls have been put
away. The uniforms have been turned
in. The practices are done and the matches have
all been played. The end of another successful
girls volleyball season at Berean. Success is not
only measured in wins versus losses or personal accomplishments, but
also (at least at Berean) by the amount of growth in our walk with
the Lord.
As far
as wins and losses go, both teams posted winning seasons over mostly
much bigger schools. Both the Junior Varsity and
Varsity teams finished second in the DVAL with the only losses to
Northgate in league play. The JVs had an overall
record of 19-9 and the Varsity finished at 25-11.
The Varsity won matches over McKinleyville and Cardinal
Newman before falling to Salesian in the North Coast Section
semi-finals.
Individual league honors were confirmed upon the
following players by the league coaches: First
team all-league to seniors Savanna Stevens and Jessica Vestal;
Second team players were senior Cheyenne Boelk and junior Michelle
Mayfield; junior Laura Hoover was placed on the Honorable Mention
team.
The verse this year for the teams is found in
Romans 12:11-12, "Don't burn out; keep yourselves fueled
and
aflame.
Be alert servants of the Master, cheerfully expectant. Don't quit in
hard times; pray all the harder." The
teams, players and coaches all found themselves going through the
highs and lows associated with being part of a competitive
season. Did they keep themselves "fueled and
aflame" by looking to the Lord? Ask one of the
players or coaches when you see them.
The coaches and players want to thank their faithful
supporters made up of students, friends and parents.
Their presence and cheering is always a help in encouraging
the players to do their best.
Our three seniors, Cheyenne,
Jessica and Savanna will be missed. The returning
members of the program will be working in the off-season to prepare
themselves to keep the volleyball traditions alive and
well.

2015 FRESHMAN PARENTS |
2015
Parents Off to a Great Start
The new group of Freshmen parents have
met twice to kick off the year and begin to
build
friendships. In August we all
gathered at Panera
to get aquainted while our students enjoyed
their
first day of school. This past
month we enjoyed a
wonderful time at the home of Leslie
Mueller. We
continued to build bonds as we enjoyed a pot luck
lunch and later an informative meeting .
Many
topics where covered including Homecoming,
finals
and parent involvement. Our next
get together will be
December 2nd and will include
a
$10 ornament exchange. Please keep
a look out for
an upcoming Evite with all the details.
