Did you know?

Of Berean's approximately 440 students, 280 play at least one sport each year and over 100 athletes play at least two sports. That means that 64% of the students were representing Berean to the community on the field, court, track or pool last year. Well done folks!

 PHILOSOPHY OF ATHLETICS
Philosophy of Athletics at Berean Christian
Eagle Logo

What sets Berean Christian apart in athletics? Craig Lee the Athletic Director at Berean shares some excerpts from the guidelines of Philosophy of Athletics...

- We believe that interscholastic athletics are a part of; and not separate from, the total education program of the school.

- Athletics provide an opportunity to display ideals and attitudes for which the school stands. Few other areas of the school program are observed by the public like its athletic program. Certainly no other area receives as much publicity through local news media.

-Berean Christian High School believes that "winning" is giving 100% at all times to your Lord, your teammates and yourself.

- Few teachers have the opportunity to experiment with new ideas and to witness the results of their teaching like a coach does. Rapport between coaches and athletes is usually more easily attainable than in a regular classroom situation. As a result, an opportunity for a very effective personal guidance situation is established and it is in this situation that the coach can show real leadership and direction both in the physical realm of athletics as well as the spiritual aspects of life. A good coach will recognize situations that can be used to accomplish these objectives.

- Our varsity coaches are responsible to develop programs that not only bring glory to God at all times but that put the teams in a position to win contests.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Girls Basketball
Girls Basketball

Open Gym will be starting on September 20th on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at either Berean or Northgate HS gyms.  All girls who are interested in playing basketball at either the JV or Varsity level are encouraged to come out and play.  There will be girls with all levels of ability so don't be intimidated if you haven't played for a while.  You don't want to wait until November try-outs to touch a basketball or start running to get in shape.  There will be opportunities to play in pick-up games or just shoot around on your own to improve individual skills.  It is also a great time to get to know girls from our school as well as Northgate HS.

Also, stay tuned for a lunchtime meeting for all girls interested in playing this year.  The meeting will take place on Wednesday September 14th and pizza will be provided. That will be a time for all of you to meet other players and coaches and learn a little bit about our program.  Pay attention to the morning announcements for the room locations.

BEREAN BASEBALL - Continuing the Winning Tradition

The Berean Christian baseball program successfully ended the 2011 season last spring in the quarterfinal round of the NCS playoffs and with a 15-10 overall record. Preparations are already underway to maintain or exceed each year's great results, as we are continuing to encourage players - existing and prospective - to get into a fall and/or winter off-season program in one of several existing clubs in the area. Please contact me if you would like to know more about these club programs, or if you have any questions about Berean Baseball.

Before we focus on the 2012 season, which begins on February 6 with tryouts at Heather Farms, we want to recognize this year's team and individual accomplishments. Our team completed a championship three-peat at the Vacaville Christian Easter Tournament with a thrilling triumph in the final, finished in the middle of the pack against the DVAL, reached the NCS and advanced after soundly defeating Cloverdale in the opening round, and then closed the season against East Bay baseball powerhouse St. Mary's in the quarterfinals.

At the year-end banquet, several players were recognized for their efforts on and off the field. Travis Tos and Jessica Vestal received the Eagle Award for overall outstanding achievement on the varsity and junior varsity teams, respectively.  On the varsity squad, by a vote of players, Devin Alexander and Logan Lisle were tapped as the top offensive and defensive players, Justin David received the Gamer Award, and Beau Walchek was named the best teammate. On the JVs, Tim Wirtz was honored with the Inspirational Award. Last, but certainly not least, Scholar-Athletes on the team included Devin Alexander, Travis Tos, Logan Lisle, Jessica Vestal, Lake Herbert, Cole Hermeston, David Padua, and Tim Wirtz.

Seven members of the team were also recognized by the DVAL's coaches. Garnering all-league honors were Devin Alexander and Drew Lamont on the 1st Team, Connor Cabral, Justin David and Logan Lisle on the 2nd Team, and Josh Lopez and Travis Tos on Honorable Mention. Congratulations to all, and we look forward to continuing to honor Him in 2012.

   JOHN SWETT GAME

EAGLE FOOTBALL 2011

Our team's 1st order of business is for continued prayer for Dominic Barich.  Like so many of our players, Dominic has worked out all summer in preparation for the 2011 season.   Dominic is a big man, with a big heart, with big expectations placed upon him.  Last week Dominic was afflicted with Appendicitis followed by surgery.  As you think of our brother we ask that you pray for the presence of Jesus in his life to be of encouragement to him and for a speedy recovery.

As our team waits for Dom's return to the field they are getting fired up for their 1st game vs. D IV neighbor John Swett on Friday September 2 at 7 PM at John Swett High School (JV at 4:30).  We are pleased to have been able to get this game with a D IV team so close to home.  Our players love the support of classmates and fans so come on out to the game and be an encouragement to your brothers.

VOLLEYBALL

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL FIRES UP FOR ANOTHER SEASON

VP PrayerThe Varsity and Junior Varsity volleyball teams have completed their try-outs.  Thirty-eight energetic and hard working girls competed for a spot on one of the teams.

Thirteen girls landed on the varsity team, which is led this year by senior captains Cheyenne Boelk, Savanna Stevens and Jessica Vestal.  The J.V. team will be composed of fourteen players.

The Varsity team is working hard in practice preparing to defend their league championship - their goal is to four-peat as DVAL champs.  They know that this will not be an easy task.

The teams' cheer this season is "On Fire" based on the scripture found in Mr. Maitlin on fire Romans 12:11-12 which states "Don't burn out; keep yourselves fueled and aflame. Be alert servants of the Master, cheerfully expectant. Don't quit in hard times; pray all the harder."

Mr. Maitlen met with the players, coaches and parents and challenged us all to be available to the Lord as he sets us "on fire" in our daily walk with Him no matter where we are or what we are doing.

The girls look forward to enjoying the great support they have had in the past from the Berean community.  All day on September 17th Berean will be hosting the Paul Lou Invitational Varsity Tournament.  Eight varsity teams will be competing in our gym.  Also on the 17th, the football teams will be playing at home.  So, poke your head (and the rest of you too) into the air conditioned (thank you Lord) gym before or after the football game and see some hard working, fired up girls play volleyball at a high level.

Volleyball season goes from September to November - mostly on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  Check the schedule on MaxPreps.com or highschoolsports.net and come to cheer on the girls in their journey.
