Support FAQs

How is Berean funded as an independent school?

Tuition provides the largest segment of revenue to the school. Other funds are derived from tax-deductible contributions, such as annual gifts to The Annual Fund, special fundraising events, and income on investments.

Doesn’t tuition cover costs at Berean?

Not quite. Tuition covers most operating costs such as salaries, benefits, supplies, utilities and maintenance, but The Annual Fund closes the gap between tuition and expenses. In order to provide special enhancements for the students and faculty, parents, past-parents, alumni, corporations and foundations all support the school by their contributions to The Annual Fund. Construction of facilities comes from Capital Campaign funding, not The Annual Fund.

What does the Annual Fund provide for the school?

Tax-deductible gifts providing financial aid for students, enhancing instructional/student programs, improving technology, aiding in staff development, and allowing improvements to our facilities. Some of the many elements covered by the Annual Fund include:

  • State of the art computers and specialized software
  • Physical education and athletic equipment
  • Professional workshops and training sessions for faculty and staff
  • New and more advanced equipment for science classes
  • Support of performing arts programs

Are gifts to the Annual Fund considered tax-deductible contributions?

Yes! Berean is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization and contributions to the Annual Fund are tax-deductible. When you send your donation to the school, your gift will be confirmed in a letter that should be kept for tax purposes.

What am I expected to contribute?

Each Berean family must determine what amount they are able to contribute and each gift is important. When Berean seeks funding from other sources such as foundations and corporations, it is important to be able to illustrate the support of its parents and others by the percentage of individuals who contribute to Berean. Consequently, we strive for 100% family participation. Most of Berean’s parents appreciate the school’s efforts to provide a solid educational program for its students and participate in The Annual Fund. All contributions will be recognized in the Berean Annual Report, which is printed in the fall.

Many companies have matching programs for their employees and every year we are the grateful recipients of corporate matching gifts. Please contact the Development Office if you feel your company may participate in a matching gift program. We are eager to increase our annual support by participating in as many matching gift opportunities as possible.

Are there other times I might be asked to contribute?

The Berean Development Office sponsors several fundraising activities for the school including the SchoolPOP and the eSCRIP program. Involved parents will want to participate in these activities. Student groups also sponsor smaller fundraising activities.

What about capital funds? Isn’t Berean entering a capital campaign?

The upcoming building and enhancement projects will require special funding to ensure completion. Campaign gifts are made in addition to annual contributions to The Annual Fund and are often paid out over several years. In the coming months, you will be hearing more about Berean’s building and enhancement projects and the Capital Campaign.

May I make a gift of appreciated stock?

Yes, stock gifts can be of great benefit to both the donor and the institution receiving the gift. You may be able to avoid capital gains tax by making a gift of appreciated stock. Please contact the Development Office for instructions on how to transfer stock to Berean.

If I have questions, whom do I call?

Questions about the Annual Fund may be directed to the school office 925-945-6464.

I already pay a lot in tuition - why should I give more?

At Berean, we are committed to having tuition cover all of our basic operating expenses. Your gift to the Annual Fund Campaign helps provide financial aid for students, enhance instructional/student programs, improve technology, aid in staff development, and allow improvements to our facilities.

When and how will I be asked to make a contribution?

In the fall, each Berean family receives a letter and a brochure explaining the Annual Fund Campaign and the Goal for the year. The Development Office keeps us abreast of the progress of the campaign. You may contact the Development Office at any time to ask questions. You may choose to mail in your gift to Annual Fund or to pay through your student billing account. You may also make a pledge, which may be paid in installments.

If I make a pledge, when will I be expected to pay my pledge?

You may "pledge now, pay later". Pledges must be paid before the end of the fiscal year, June 30. You may pay in installments. Pledges may be paid on a semi-annual, quarterly, or monthly basis. Reminder notices will be sent according to the instructions you indicate on your pledge form.

I can't give as much as I'd like to, my gift really wouldn't make a difference, would it?

Yes! Every gift of every size is important to Berean and to our students. Your contribution at any level demonstrates your support of Berean's efforts on behalf of our children. Your participation and the amount of total parent participation demonstrate broad based support to the community at large and to foundations and corporations who are considering making contributions to Berean. Foundations who donate money to schools are very interested in seeing a high level of parent participation in Annual Fund. Let's make our family participation 100%!

How does my child benefit from the Annual Fund Campaign?

Every student at Berean benefits from the Annual Fund Campaign. Annual giving assures that Berean’s educational excellence includes small class sizes, a superb faculty, a quality learning environment, and rich extracurricular activities for a diverse group of students. Your contribution each year builds the foundation for years to come."

Can I direct my gift to a certain area?

If you wish, you may designate your Annual Fund Campaign gift to certain areas. The following areas are suggested for your designation:

  • Berean’s greatest need
  • Instructional/Student Programs
  • Technology
  • Financial aid
  • Athletics
  • Staff Development
  • Facility Improvements

What is a matching gift?

Matching gifts are often available from employer's matching gift programs. Please take the time to ask the Human Resources Office, at your place of employment, if your employer participates in a matching gift program.

Why are unrestricted gifts important?

We expect that the Berean Annual Fund will become a core component of the School’s development effort, and a critical factor in the School’s ongoing success. Unrestricted gifts will support all aspects of the student experience, including computing services, our library, new courses suggested by students that are responsive to the marketplace, and our alumni network. These gifts also provide the School with a flexible source of capital that may be deployed to provide the "seed money for change" that allows the School to initiate and implement outstanding programs and services.

When can I make my gift to the Berean Annual Fund?

Our fiscal year begins on July 1 and ends on June 30. Donors who make gifts during these time periods will be recognized for their gifts in that year's Annual Report of donors.
